Dibakar ready with Oye Lucky,Oye Lucky Lucky Oye on the 21st of Novembe
Thursday, November 20, 2008 (New Delhi)
A simple story of a middle class family in Delhi that is swindled out of its plot of land by a property agent Khosla Ka Ghosla was 2006 s sleeper hit. It's director Dibakar Banerjee is set to return with Oye Lucky Lucky Oye on the 21st of November. NDTVMovies spoke to this new force in Bollywood as he readies himself for his second release
NDTV: You said in your blog-post that people considered Khosla Ka Ghosla an out and out comedy, and were laughing at all the wrong places. Were you unhappy with this response?
DB: No of course not, I was very happy with the response to Khosla because I saw that people, regular people like you and me, saw what I was trying to show. They understood the irony that lay under the seemingly funny situation. I was in fact really amazed at the details people noticed.
As far as unexpected laughs are concerned, I realized that what you write in isolation, how you imagine things, changes drastically when the audience sees it. Sometimes they share the little joke you ve put in with much deliberation, sometimes they don t. Sometimes they pick up on little things that you ve put in almost unconsciously. It is really educating to see what people connect with.
It was only people in the industry who hadn t even seen the film, but just heard about it, who were eager to classify me as a director of comedies.
NDTV: Moving on to your upcoming film, tell us a little bit about it. Have you approached it differently from Khosla ?
DB: Yes, there is a fundamental difference between Oye Lucky and Khosla . See, crime happens, it is all around us, and quite naturally, our response to it is rooted in our psyche and upbringing. We usually come into the picture once the crime has been committed, only to deal with the consequences. Oye Lucky however, is from the perspective of the criminal. So while Khosla was about the victims, Oye Lucky is about the criminal. Lucky is the kind of criminal who is exactly like any middle-class boy. He eats, sleeps, calls his girlfriend, goes to work , fights with his dad etc. Like any normal person, he has aspirations, and wants to be famous for what he does.
